CIO is a leader institution at national level in the fields of optics and photonics, and its presence at an international level has been on the rise. This leadership rests on the generation of cutting edge knowledge within our strategic areas of research: Optical Fibers and Lasers, Optical Engineering, Nanophotonics, Nonlinear Optics and Non-destructive Optical Testing.

Within these areas our researchers focus their efforts on well-defined sectors, mainly making an impact on the energy (generation, handling, saving and storage), health (biophotonics, including imaging, diagnosis and therapy), food and manufacturing sectors.
