El Dr. Coutiño realizó estudios de doctorado en Química en la Universidad Católica de Lovaina (Bélgica) donde desarrolló el proyecto “Luminescent silver exchanged zeolites and their applications”, bajo la supervisión de los Profesores Johan Hofkens y Bert Sels. Sus estudios de doctorado se enfocaron en el diseño, síntesis y caracterización de materiales nano-estructurados con aplicaciones en fotónica y optoelectrónica. Realizó una estancia posdoctoral en el grupo de visualización molecular y fotónica de la KU Leuven. Fungió como investigador de cátedras CONACYT en el CIDETEQ de 2016 a 2019. Los productos de su trabajo han sido reflejados en publicaciones en revistas indizadas de alto impacto, presentaciones en congresos nacionales e internaciones, así como una solicitud de patente. Ha impartido el curso de síntesis y caracterización de nanomateriales, y el de microscopía de fluorescencia aplicada en el estudio de materiales fotónicos. Ha sido acreedor de la mención honorífica durante sus estudios de licenciatura, recibió prestigiosas becas para realizar estudios de doctorado y posdoctorado. Ha dirigido diversas tesis de licenciatura y maestría, pertenece al sistema nacional de investigadores (nivel I), a la red mexicana de bioenergía, y a la sociedad mexicana de materiales. Ha participado en diversos proyectos como colaborador (entre ellos un proyecto de la unión europea fp7, donde participó como administrador científico) y funge como responsable técnico de proyectos de ciencia básica (CONACYT) y de los fondos UC-MEXUS.
