Información Personal/Académica:
Carmelo estudio física en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, en donde surgió su curiosidad por la óptica.
Esta curiosidad lo llevo al Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE) a cursar la maestría en óptica.
Durante este periodo realizó una estancia de investigación en el grupo de pinzas ópticas del Profesor Kishan Dholakia,
en St. Andrews (Escocia), y fue ahí en donde nació su interés por la luz estructurada. En 2011 obtuvo una beca para realizar
un doctorado en el Instituto de Ciencias Fotónicas (ICFO) de Barcelona. Al término de su doctorado, en 2015, se unió al
grupo de luz estructurada, dirigido por el Profesor Andrew Forbes, de la Universidad de Witwatersrand en Johannesburgo.
Posteriormente, fue contratado como profesor en la Universidad de Ciencia y Tecnología de Harbin (China), cargo que
desempeño desde 2018 y hasta 2020, cuando fue contratado por el CIO como investigador titular.
Su interés como investigador está centrado en los haces estructurados, su generación, caracterización y aplicaciones.
Ha publicado más de 70 artículos de investigación en revistas tales como Nature physics, Nature Photonics, Phisycal
Review Letters, Optica, entre muchas más, que incluyen varios artículos de revisión sobre luz estructurada y el libro
How to Shape Light with Spacial Light Modulators. Carmelo forma parte del panel de editores de las revistas
Journal of Optics y Frontiers in Phisycs, además de ser parte del comité organizador de la conferencia internacional
Laser Beam Shaping de la SPIE y de formar parte del comité evaluador de becas para estudiantes de posgrado,
también de la SPIE. Su destacada trayectoria le hizo merecedor en 2023 al prestigioso premio internacional SPIE
Early Career Achievement Award, convirtiéndolo en el primer investigador latinoamericano en ser distinguido con este
