David Monzón Hernández obtained the degree of electronics engineer, master and doctor of sciences with a specialty in optics from the University of Guanajuato. Although the studies and research work to obtain the degree of master and doctor of sciences were carried out at the Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica A.C. (CIO). In 2002, he joined the CIO as a senior researcher in the fiber optics department and formed the Optical Sensors and Microdevices Group. The group's research has been focused on the design and manufacture of novel fiber optic devices, with improved qualities, to develop low-cost optical sensors to monitor, among others, the presence of potentially dangerous contaminants in water. Among the devices proposed by the research group, which have managed to attract the attention of the community, include Mach-Zehnder interferometer with thinned fiber, extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer or thinned optical fibers covered with metallic films. The research currently carried out by Dr. Monzón is aimed at developing platforms for sensing multiple magnitudes simultaneously using photonic devices based on surface plasmon resonance and optical interference integrated into microfluidic circuits.
